THEODORE, Ala. — Walter Bellingrath and his wife, Bessie, opened Bellingrath Gardens to the public in 1932. In 1949 at age 80, Bellingrath created the Bellingrath-Morse Foundation to perpetuate the existence of his beloved Home and Gardens for future generations to enjoy.
Today, Bellingrath is open 364 days a year, and hosts thousands of visitors.
To honor its founder and his many contributions to the community, Bellingrath Gardens and Home will celebrate his birthday with the residents of Baldwin and Mobile counties.
On Aug. 6, anyone that lives in either county will be admitted to the gardens free of charge. Just provide identification at the entry building to verify residence.
Regular admission will be charged for the Bellingrath Museum Home and the Southern Belle River Cruise.
