Behind the scenes: Tropic Falls at OWA opens phase 2 of water park with 2 outdoor attractions

FOLEY — Tropic Falls at OWA will be adding two new water-based attractions, making it the newest destination for your summer bucket list.

Big Water Bay and Coastal Curl surf simulator will be opening to the public on March 24, with an official grand opening April 14.

The featured attractions include a wave pool, 48-foot LED screen, live performance stage and surf simulator.

“This has been in development for more than four years,” said Kristin Hellmich, OWA spokesperson. “We wanted to grow our attractions and find a way to bring the beach to OWA.”

Hellmich said the waves have eight different intensity settings and a surf simulator with the option to body surf or use a surfboard.

“The waves stay on for 10 minutes and cycle every 10 minutes,” Hellmich said. “They can get up to 8 feet tall.”

Access to the wave pool is included in the regular ticket price, which also includes access to the theme park and indoor water park that opened last fall.

Hellmich said the area will be monitored by lifeguards, keeping it a safe and family friendly environment.

Hellmich said there are plans to use the wave pool for year-round events, such as live performances and swim-in movies.

“The most unique feature is that it has the indoor water park attached, so in case of weather issues patrons can still swim in the indoor water park,” Hellmich said. “The water in the wave pool is also heated, so it can stay open year-round.”

Hellmich said OWA has been seeing record numbers since spring break and expects for that to continue.

“We love the beach," she said, "but this is a great option for people who don’t want to venture to the gulf.”
