MOBILE, Alabama - The Robertsdale Bears scored three late runs in misty rain Friday night and walked away with a 7-5 win over the Satsuma Gators in the second round of the 16th annual BayBears High School Classic at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.

The two teams battled early before the Bears pitching clamped down and held the Gator offense in check in the latter stages of the game.

“Every time we play Satsuma it’s like that. We have played Mike for years and I respect him and we knew it was going to be like this and they were going to make a run,” Bears head coach Kevin Raley said. “It was a good baseball game. We made a few mistakes and they did too. Offensively we got some big hits and we did some little things we needed to do. Baseball is a marathon.”

Bear staring pitcher Kyle Brown lasted three innings in the game and pitched nearly 50 pitches while letting up four runs to the Gators before reliever Troy Johnson came in and shut the door. Johnson earned the win pitching three innings of shut out baseball while only allowing three hits and also striking out three batters.

“Kyle threw on Wednesday and threw about 11 or 12 pitches. He did fine, he just missed spots and gave up three 0-2 hits and you can’t do that against a good baseball team. Hopefully he will learn something from that,” Raley said. “Troy came in and he threw great.”

The Gators scored in the first inning when Ben Lowery led off the game with a base hit before Cody Threlkeld hit a triple giving the Gators the early lead.

It was one of three hits from Threlkeld on the evening. He was also a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle.

After a quick bottom of the first where the Bears went down in order the Gators increased their lead when pitcher Justin Buttersworth brought in Dylan Szymanski on a RBI base hit.

The Bears soon tide it in the bottom of the second after the Gators made a few mistakes including balking in the trying run.

After the Gators took the lead 3-2 the Bears rattled off 5 straight runs including a three run fifth inning that brought the Bear lead to 7-4. Chad Broussard had the big hit in the inning when he lased he ball down the right field line platting two Bear runners.

Satsuma did not go away quietly however, as they made closer Tony Kucera sweat a little bit, scoring two runs in the top half of the seventh inning before he was able to close the door giving the Bears the win.

With the win the Bears improved to 2-2 as they closed out their schedule in the competitive BayBears Classic.

“When you play Saraland, Fairhope, Gulf Shores, and then Satsuma in a four day span it’s going to help you,” Raley said. “It’s good competition and that’s why we do it every year. We think it gets us ready and it gives guys some work. It also gives us the opportunity to find some stuff we need to work on.”

The Bears will be back in action again on March 1 when they travel to play Bryant.
