Beach initiative collections increasing in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores

ORANGE BEACH, AL - Crews in both beach towns on Pleasure Island found more abandoned beach items overnight on the second day of the Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of summer.

In Orange Beach nearly 100 chairs, some reportedly with store tags still on them, 20 tents, three large bags of empty cans and two bags of trash overnight on May 28. That compares to 20 chairs and six tents were collected and discarded overnight on May 27.

"The beach never looked better on a Sunday morning of Memorial Day weekend," Orange Beach Director of Coastal Resources Phillip West said.

In Gulf Shores crews picked up 40 chairs and 12 tents overnight on May 28 compared to 26 chairs and five tents left on that city's beaches overnight May 27.

Both cities, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber collaborated on the Leave Only Footprints campaign and new rules disallowing items being left on beaches overnight. The program was started in March.

From March 11 to May 12 a contractor working for the city of Orange Beach collected  from the beach 23 tents or sun shades, 135 chairs, 320 pounds of toys, 100 pounds of towels, 200 pounds of cans, 80 pounds of glass and 400 pounds of trash.
