FOLEY, Alabama — The Baldwin County Tigers are going back to a place head coach Lorenzo Hunter likes to call "home" for his team: the 6A South Regional tournament at the Mitchell Center in Mobile.
The Tigers (21-12) beat the Foley Lions 60-49 in a sub-regional on Friday to advance to face the winner of Davidson and Baker on Tuesday at the Mitchell Center.
"We are happy to be back home," Hunter said. "Home for us is the Mitchell Center. We missed last it year, but out of the last 13 years we have been over there nine or 10 times. We just believe that we are supposed to be there."
The Lions, coached by Hunter's brother Shumbe, kept the game close through three periods. The Tigers led 14-12 after one period and held a 21-17 lead at the half. BCHS began to pull away in the third with a 39-30 lead and opened the final period with an 8-1 run that put the game nearly out of reach.
"My brother had a great game plan," Hunter said. "I thought his kids played very well. They had a good home crowd and he kept his kids fired up. But for some reason we seem to be playing well on the road. I don't know if we have less distractions than we do when we play at home, but we are playing really well on the road."
Xavier Dortch and Larry Rogers had 15 points apiece for the Tigers, and Rogers finished the night with 1,006 points for his career. Marcus Johnson added 11 points in the win.
Rafael Adams scored 24 and Quinton Butler had 20 in the loss for Foley.
"We had some costly turnovers and didn't capitalize on some close shots," Shumbe Hunter said. "We had missed opportunities. Baldwin County played a great game, can't take that away from them. But we did a lot to aide them in their win. Overall I'm proud of these guys for coming as far as they have. We have a lot of growing to do physically and mentally. Everything is on the upside. It sucks to lose, but you have to learn from losses like this."
