BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Baldwin County Tigers went 2-2 in the Gulf Coast Classic baseball tournament with wins over Austin and Southside-Gadsden and losses to Charles Henderson and Huntsville.
“We are part of tough pool. We are kind of all knocking each other off right now,” Tiger head coach Peter Bezeredi said after a loss to Charles Henderson on Wednesday. “We were 2-0 coming into this game and hopefully we can get a win and get back on track.”
Starting pitcher Houston Mabray was the story for the Trojans on Wednesday. He pitched a complete game shutout while only allowing five hits.
The Tigers also failed to have a runner reach third base and they were only on second three times during the game.
“They have a fine team over there. We got down early and we gave them some freebies and they took advantage of them,” coach Bezeredi said. “We couldn’t mount anything to come back.”
Mabray was not the only one performing well Wednesday afternoon for the Trojans, The offense kept up its momentum that was apparently carried over from yesterday’s double header.
“We swung the bats well enough to score some runs even though we didn’t hit many doubles or any homeruns,” Trojan Head coach Derek Irons said. “We strung some hits together and had some great at bats. We had four at bats that went over seven pitches. Those (stats) don’t jump out to people but those are big over the course of a game.”
Although the Trojans put up nine runs on Wednesday the Tigers played well defensively to prevent the game form completely getting out of hand.
“Andre Cox made some outstanding highlight reel catches in right field and our bullpen came in and played okay,” Bezeredi said. “We just spotted them too many for them early and we couldn’t come back from it.”
The Tigers got behind down after the Trojans put up two runs in the first inning when Tripp Blackmon and Chase Smartt scored on a runs batted in base hit by Austin Ingram.
After going scoreless in the second inning the Trojans were back at it again in the third and fourth inning when they scored three runs off RBI hits by again Ingram and Joey Denison. The Trojans tacked on their final run in the fifth off another RBI base hit by Ingram.
BCHS will be in action again on April 8 when they travel to Gulf Shores to face the Dolphins. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
