SPANISH FORT, Alabama - The Baldwin County Tigers kept the momentum rolling on the road Tuesday night in a 68-50 win over the Spanish Fort Toros thanks in large part to a good night of shooting from behind the arc.
On the night the Tigers made eight three-pointers to put the pressure on the hosting Toros that lasted the majority of the night. The Tiger win splits the season series between the two teams. The Toros won the previous meeting 56-45 on Dec. 8.
“We played pretty good,” Tigers head coach Lorenzo Hunter said. “It was the best defense that I have seen from us in a while. Spanish Fort is a great team. They weren’t ranked in the top 10 early in the season for nothing. They came into our place and beat us by 11 so it was good for us to return to their place and play well and get the win.”
Going into the game Tuesday a big concern for Coach Hunter has been a lack of discipline at times on his team. Even with the win he said it is still a work in process.
“We are still not playing total team defense and that is selfish,” Hunter said. “We have to get to the point where everybody is playing defense. We still had some older guys playing with four fouls or even fouled out. I think that is selfish.”
The Tigers finished with three players in double figures with senior Justin Mayes scoring a game-high 23 points. Andre Cox finished with 14 and Isiah Dortch had 13.
The loss by the Toros is their second in a row, but they still have won three out of their last 5 games.
“I have to credit BCHS tonight. They were a lot better than us,” Toros head coach Dru Powell said. “They deserved to win tonight and we didn’t. We weren’t very strong with the basketball and we turned it over. We need to work on not turning it over and to make free throws.”
Spanish Fort senior Austin Depperschmidt led the way for the Toros with 18 points, while senior Reagan Eubanks finished with 12.
Cox and Mayes got the Tigers going in the right direction early in the first quarter when they combined to score the first eight points for the Tigers.
The Tors duo of Depperschmidt and Eubanks answered back at the end of the quarter when they led a 13-0 run to give them an 18-16 lead. Mayes and the Tigers gained control of the half in the second quarter when they outscored the Toros 18-6 to give them a half time lead of 34-24.
The Depperschmidt led Toros opened the second half on a 10-0 run thanks in large part to the eight points from the senior. The third quarter ended with the Tigers holding a slim 50-45 lead.
Mayes made another appearance in the early stages of the fourth quarter as he led a 14-0 run that prompted Coach Powell and the Toros to empty their bench to finish the game.
The Toros close out the season with home games against Bayside and Foley. Baldwin County ends the regular season in a road matchup against McGill-Toolen on Friday.
