BAY MINETTE – A couple of mistakes late in the game saved the fourth-ranked Baldwin County High School Tigers from their second lost of the year as they defeated McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets 59-55.
A three-point shot from McGill's Terry York set off a 9-0 run with 4:04 left in the first period, but the Tigers came back with 29.1 left in the period with their own 10-point run, led by a layup from Michael Stanley. The Yellow Jackets' Tevin Bettis tied the game up at 23 with 1:51 left in the half. Two layups from Stanley and Aaron Williams gave the Tigers the 27-25 lead at half time.
After the break the Tigers pulled away with a 14-8 third period led by Charleston Gandy. The fourth quarter of the game was a high impact period as York was fouled on a layup shot and tied the game at 52 for the Yellow Jackets with 1:43 left in the game.
Down by one point with 33.1 seconds left in the game Gandy hit a layup to give the Tigers a one-point lead. With 25 seconds left a forced turnover and scramble for the ball set up a bench technical foul as McGill's coach walked on the court to discuss the decision with the officials, allowing Gandy to shoot and make two foul shots to give the Tigers the three point cushion. Stanley was then fouled with 19.4 seconds left to give the Tigers the final score 59-55. Gandy led the Tigers with 16 points while Stanley had 11 points in the victory.
"Tonight was a tough game for us as we were out coached and out played by McGill,” Hunter said. “But the good Lord smiled down on this BCHS team to allow us the victory tonight. McGill had a lot to do with the momentum of tonight's game as they came out and played hard the entire game."
