FOLEY — The boys basketball season opener for Foley and Baldwin County took place on Friday at Foley High School, with the Tigers defeating the Lions in non-conference play by a score of 69-60.

The night carried special meaning for both Foley and BCHS boys’ coaches, Shumbe and Lorenzo Hunter, having lost their mother, Louise, to cancer in 2008. “Coaches vs. Cancer” represented a night in which team members, coaches, and fans wore pink in remembrance of those lost and those battling with cancer.

“I sort of stole the idea from the college ranks, thinking it would be a nice idea to recognize those from our community that have battled with cancer,” Foley coach Shumbe Hunter said. “My brother and I know firsthand how it feels to lose someone to cancer. We are trying to raise awareness on the importance of early detection. We want to do our part to raise funds for the cause.”

Four players scored in double figures for the Tigers with Larry Rogers leading the way with 18 points. Apollo Dailey added 15 points, Xavier Dortch scored 14 points, and Marcus Johnson connected for 12 points en-route to a road win. The Lions (0-1) were led by Rafael Adams, who scored 23 points andQuinton Butler had 10.

The Tigers will host Escambia County on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Foley hosts UMS-Wright tonight at 6 p.m. in the Forward City Clash of Counties.

The Foley Lady Lions (0-2) lost in non-conference action to the visiting Baldwin County Tigers (1-0), 57-40 last Friday.

Last year’s County Coach of The Year, Robert Wills, was very pleased with his team’s effort.

“Our girls are experienced and that really helped us get a win tonight,” Wills said.

With three players in double digits, the Tigers ended the first half with a 33-17 lead. BCHS shooting guard, Latreka Jenkins, a three-time all-county player and 1,000 point contender, led all scores with 18 points, while teammate Nakea McDouglal added 12 points in the first half and 13 to end the game. Latia Pullman chipped in 10 points for BCHS.

Foley point guard Payton Kiser added 16 points for the Lions, connecting on four three pointers, and Brittney Davis had 14 points.

The Tigers are next in action at home on Saturday, Nov. 19 when 4A Escambia County visits BCHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Lions remain at home, taking on Oak Mountain High School on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m.
