HOMEWOOD, Ala.—Bayside Academy bounced back from a five-set loss at Class 6A No. 4 Hoover High Thursday night only to meet up with the Buccaneers in the championship match of the Margaret Blalock Memorial Tournament Saturday at Homewood High.

The Class 3A No. 1-ranked Admirals went 7-0 in the prestigious tourney and won every match without dropping a game. Bayside swept Bob Jones, Opp, Pleasant Valley and Oak Mountain in pool play. Then eliminated Sparkman in the quarterfinals, No. 1-ranked 6A McGill-Toolen-Catholic in the semifinal and beat No. 4-ranked 6A Hoover in the championship 25-20, 25-15. The Admirals also claimed the hat-trick winning the event for the third consecutive year.

Bayside (48-8) was led by Morgan Dulaney with 58 kills, three aces, nine blocks and 33 digs; Lauren Chastang with 17 aces, 38 kills, five blocks and 62 digs; Ariel Dulaney with 28 kills, six blocks, 37 digs and eight aces; Madison Matthews with 47 digs and five aces; Julia Martin with nine kills, 33 digs and three aces and Sydney Chandler with 139 assists, five aces, five kills and 30 digs.

Chandler’s 139 assists means she only needs 12 assists to break the national high school assist record which she could do at the 3A Area 1 tournament at Bayside Monday.

Hoover’s Kathryn Cather had 42 kills, Olivia Portera had 91 assists, Jessica McElderry had 20 blocks, and Anna Claire Johnson had 36 digs and 18 aces to lead the Bucs to a 6-1 finish.
