Bayside senior Sophie Weller wins DAR Good Citizen chapter award

Posted

Bayside Academy senior Sophie Weller was named the chapter winner of the Good Citizen Program for the Ecor Rouge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Weller’s essay and application will advance to the state level of the competition, according to a news release.

The DAR Good Citizen Program challenges students to demonstrate civic responsibility and character. Participants are given a topic on the spot and must write a timed essay without additional resources. Each of the six area high schools — Bayshore Christian School, Bayside Academy, Daphne High School, Fairhope High School, St. Michael Catholic School and Spanish Fort High School — selects one senior who best exemplifies the qualities of a good citizen to compete. Those qualities include dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

At Bayside, Weller was first chosen as a finalist by faculty members and then selected as the school winner by a student vote. Her application included a resume, letters of recommendation and an essay completed within two hours.

Weller attended the Ecor Rouge DAR chapter luncheon and awards program on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, where she was named chapter winner. She read her essay to the audience following the announcement. Her parents, Kelly and Joseph Weller, were also in attendance.

The Ecor Rouge Chapter sponsors the six participating high schools, while other Baldwin County high schools are sponsored by different DAR chapters. In addition to Weller, school-level Good Citizen winners recognized during the program included Wright Wilcoxson of Fairhope High School, Darby Smith of Spanish Fort High School, Kerigan Chapman of Bayshore Christian School, Aubrey Gregg of Daphne High School, Mitchell Swanson of St. Michael Catholic High School and Amy Molyneux, DAR chapter regent. Kirksey McIntosh serves as the Good Citizen chairperson for the Ecor Rouge Chapter.
