MUSCLE SHOALS, Alabama— The Bayside Admirals sunk the Class 3A competition Monday and Tuesday to claim the 2013 AHSAA boys state golf championship at the Shoals Schoolmaster.

The Admirals defeated White Plains by 34 strokes and Lauderdale by 38 with a winning 36-hole total of 601. Bayside shot the low team score in both rounds with a 304 Monday and saved the best for last with a best-of-season-low 297 Tuesday. Five Admirals finished in the top 10 individual rankings.

The best individual round went to Brooks Raben of Straughn who medaled with rounds of 72 and 68 to finish 4-under par at 140.

Senior Trey Smith led B.A. with a 151, fourth place individual score. Jacob Dyas and John Solberg tied for seventh while William Buhl and Tristen Ellis tied for 10th.

The team, which also includes reserve Bryce Rouch, is coached by Mark Lasseter who also coaches the Lady Admirals. The 3A Bayside girls, who compete in the 1A-5A grouping, were led by Rebecca Todd who finished 15th overall, Haleigh Hughes (19) and Bailey Mason (27) for a 6th-place state tournament finish. 5A Muscle Shoals won the girls team trophy on the home course with a 502 total.

“I’m reallly proud of the guys and the girls this year,” Lasseter said. “Obviously, the boys really stepped their game up a notch toward the end of the season. Just winning three regular tournaments in a row is hard enough, but these guys won sectional, sub-state and then state. They just worked hard and they really impressed me with that and how calm they approached the situation.

"But they just played their game and although nobody really shot the best score, they all worked together to come in with top-10 scores and we went on to win by a lot of strokes. We shot a 304 on Monday to tie our best 18-hole score up ‘til then and came back and had our best round all year with a 297.”

Virginia Green of Fairhope shot an even-par 72 to warm up Monday then fired a four-under 68 to finish four strokes under par at 140 to win the 2013 girls 6A individual state championship. LeeAnn Cahoon of Prattville and Tatum Jackson of Mountain Brook were tied for third at 149.

2012 6A boys co-champion Alex Green of Fairhope finished tied for ninth with rounds of 71 and 80. McGill’s boys, led by Sheldon Statkewicz who shot a pair of 74s and Daniel Lursen (149), took third in 6A. The Yellow Jackets were edged out by Auburn 609-610 behind winner Spain Park at 600.

In 5A boys, St. Paul’s senior Robby Shelton hit a five-under-par 67 Tuesday to lead the Saints to the 5A boys’ crown with 620 team score. Russellville was second at 632 and Spanish Fort third with a 646. Freshman Charles Wood led the SF Toros with an 80 on Monday and a 75 in round two.

St. Luke’s boys won the 1A-2A title with Wesley Hunter finishing three under with a 71 and 70. Wildcat teammate Payton Massey was second overall with an even 144 total.
