DAPHNE, Alabama — The Bayside Admirals drew a tough flight in this year’s Southern Shootout falling to Brewbaker 4-2 and Robertsdale 2-1 on Friday but pulled out a 1-0 win over St. James Saturday.
Admirals coach Jamie Ferguson was pleased overall with his relatively young and limited roster.
“We played the first game terrifically,” he said. “Had 90 shots against Brewbaker Tech. Out shot them 19-5 and — they scored four goals, we scored two. So we didn’t win but I was happy with the effort and the attack. We played well, but just need to be more ruthless in front of the net. In the second game again, we both utilized full squads so it was not as fast paced with a lot of tired legs. And we have a small squad.”
Saturday, Trey Smith hit the winning goal with about 15 minutes to go in the match on a penalty kick.
“Today, we out shot them about 13-to-7 in the first half. And won by a goal. We try always to possess the ball. And did a better in the second half. But again, need to be more ruthless in front of the net. Had 13 crosses in the first half and we were only on the end of one — so, need to do a better job there for sure. But overall, we are definitely on the right track, doing a good job controlling and keeping the ball most of the time.”
The 3A Admirals defeated 6A Mary G. Montgomery 2-0 earlier in the week.
“We played very calm and composed on Tuesday night and MGM is a good team so I was pleased with that,” he said. “We defended well and had 180 completed passes to 61 incomplete so very happy with stats like that, but basically it really all comes back to doing a better job in front of the goal.”
