DAPHNE, Ala. – Bayside Academy rallied down the stretch to come back and take an important 3A Area 1 victory 37-33 over the visiting Washington County Bulldogs in Daphne Tuesday.
The Bulldogs took an early lead and held it on the Admirals until the first play of the fourth period.
Trailing 20-16 late in the third, Bayside's Geoffrey Stinebaugh hit a three-pointer from the corner with three seconds left in the period to put Bayside within a point 20-19.
On the first possession of the fourth, Dakota Brodie hit a baseline jumper to give Bayside its first lead of the game 21-20. WCHS tied it 21-21, but Brodie hit the go-ahead-for-good shot from the lane to make it 23-21.
Though pleased with the win, Bayside coach Ralph Watson said his team needs to play every quarter like they did in the fourth.
“Well, we're down 18-9 at the half so I said we just need to do what we do well – play defense. Play well defensively and eventually we'll knock down some shots. And we did. Camp (Campbell) got hot and we held them to two points in the third. So we held them and finally got going offensively. We didn't shoot it well in the first half. It was a defensive game all the way. Free-throw shooting hurt us – 12-for-27. We need to do better, obviously. We struggled offensively, but defense saved us. We handled the ball well with the lead and that's good.”
Watson said he expects the Bulldogs to be even tougher at home next time and meanwhile the BA area schedule gets no lighter with T. R. Miller and No. 9-ranked Clark County ahead.
“Washington County has some good players, they are quick, they hurt us on the boards, but we persevered and I'm proud of how they did that. It's big because it's an area game, of course, but we know it's not going to get easier. Miller will be a challenge, Washington County will be tough again and we still have Clark County, who is ranked (Top 10, 3A). We just need to worry about getting better and improving.”
Camp Campbell scored 16 points to lead Bayside (11-6, 3-0 in 3A Area 1). The senior hit 10 of his game-high points in the final period, Stinebaugh added eight, Nelson Newman five, Brodie four, Thomas Buchanan three and Grahm Barnard one.
Bayside, 3-0 in area play visits T.R. Miller Friday for a 6:30 p.m. tip off in another area showdown in Brewton.
Washington County (6-2, 1-1) was led by Ladarren Holcomb and DeMarcus Holcombe with 10 points each.
