Bayside beats Foley in Classic title game

DAPHNE, Ala. – Bayside Academy wons its second-straight home tournament with a 58-37 victory over Foley High in the title game of the 3rd Annual Admirals' Classic boys basketball tournament on Tuesday night.

Both teams scored opening-round wins in the tournament to advance to the finals. In the opening round, the Lions (3-9 overall) took a 56-46 win over Alma Bryant High (4-9) and the Admirals (9-4) topped the Mobile Christian Leapards (last year's runner-up) 65-23.

In the championship game, Bayside took control and managed to sustain it despite tough, repeated pressure by the Foley Lions.

Camp Campbell and Geoffrey Stinebaugh scored 16 points each as Bayside won their Admirals Classic in Daphne. Rafael Adams scored 14 points to lead the Lions.

Bayside (9-4) plays Montgomery Academy at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Trinity Capital City Conference Christmas Classic while Foley visits Robertsdale at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 4 for an area showdown.

“Defensively I thought we played well and got off to a good start,” said Bayside Academy coach Ralph Watson whose team hit nine three point shots in the final and eight in the semifinal. “I thought our energy was good. Of course they had a lot of energy, too. Coach (Shumbe) Hunter is getting them headed in the right direction, but they're young, they fought hard and never gave up. And they are just going to get better.”

Watson said his seniors Campbell and Thomas Buchanan are major reasons for the Admirals success so far this year.

“This team has a lot of maturity,” he said. "Thomas and Camp are our leaders, very smart, academically, athletically. They know it's a game of swings and their experience helps keep everyone else calm and get to back on track when things go wrong."

Foley coach Shumbe Hunter said his team needs to get back to basics and hopes the Holiday break will give his injured players some time to recoup.

“Fundamentals are the difference and we just didn't execute, we need to go back to the basics and start the second half of the year coming up with better focus on basic basketball . We need to improve and I think we will. I hope by then we will be all healed up and ready to go when the area games start.”

Earlier in the week in the opening round, Foley defeated Alma Bryant Hurricanes 56-46. JaVonte Long scored 14 points to lead the Lions while temmates Malcolm Barnett had 13, Raphael Adams 12, Alontai Adams seven and Kevin Jones five. Foley was 9-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Bayside took control of their opener with Mobile Christian early in the first quarter,

The Admirals led 18-5 after one quarter and led 27-11 at the half. Nelson Newman scored 17 points, Geoffrey Stinebaugh 12, Camp Campbell 10, Dakota Brodie eight and Spencer Newman and Will Wright five apiece for the Admirals.

MCS' Sam White scored six points, Tyler Rogers five and Drew Thompson four to pace the Leopards.

Bayside had eight 3-pointers and went 7-of-11 at the free-throw line while Mobile Christian was 7-of-15 from the stripe.

Watson said the tournament was fun to host, especially when his team goes undefeated. Trinity Presbetyrian won the first Admirals Classic three years ago.

“It's always good to win at home and especially to win our own tournament again,” Watson said. "I'm pleased with our effort. Our guys are playing hard.”
