DAPHNE, Alabama - Bayside Academy’s soccer seniors were sent out in grand style on a cold and cloudy Friday night when the boys and girls teams swept the Davidson Warriors on Senior Night.
After a slow start by the Lady Admirals in the first half, they were able to capitalize on some excellent chances and break through in the second for a 4-0 win.
“We felt good about how we possessed the ball tonight. We have struggled being able to put the ball in the back of night so it was important for us to find ways to score,” Lady Admirals head coach Joshua Montgomery said. “We had pretty good opportunities in the first half we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. We were able to get an early one in the second half to release some tension. Overall it was a good way to send off our seniors.”
While already leading 1-0 early in the half. Emily Wright punched in the next two giving the Admirals a 3-0 lead. Wright, a sophomore, is playing in her third season after starting her soccer career for the Admirals in the eighth grade.
“She is a gifted player. Along with many of the players she has played at the varsity level since the eighth grade. We are just trying to get her to facilitate the game and she did that tonight while also giving her some scoring chances as well,” Montgomery said.
Wright’s goals came 14 minutes into the second half and also with just under 24 minutes remaining. Junior Ann Hansen scored the final goal giving the team the win and sending the seniors off well on Senior Night.
“They were my first group when I came here as an assistant,” Montgomery said. “They have been unbelievable ambassadors and they are like family and we’re going to miss them.”
The boys’ team also played a tough brand of soccer on Friday night when they outlasted the Warriors 2-0.
“We looked solid today, we moved the ball around well,” Admirals head coach Jamie Ferguson said. “We had enough chances to seal the game. Davidson has a very good team but we limited them to zero shots. That is a very good team over there and we performed well.”
Midway through the first half the Admirals jumped out front when Harrison York through in the ball giving Collin Douglas a chance at a header which he buried in the back of the net.
After getting a handful of scoring chances it wouldn’t be until the 28:10 mark of the second half when the Admirals picked up their second goal. Mike Murphy was able to score a goal off an assist by Seth Mathews.
After holding off a handful of Warrior scoring chances late, the Admirals were able to hold them off and record a 2-0 win.
“Davidson is a 6A team so it was a good test for us physically. We played well tonight but we can play better,” Ferguson said. “We had control of the game but we have to kill games off a little better. We had nine chances to be able to make this four or five to zero.”
Like the girls the victory for the boys sent their seniors off in grand fashion on Friday night.
“It a very emotional thing, these boys have been in the program for four or five years. They are a blessing to have,” Coach Ferguson said. “They will leave to go to college but they will always be part of this family.”
