DAPHNE, Alabama – Homecoming was just what the Admirals needed.
A lopsided 47-6 win over Cottage Hill Christian erased the bitter taste of a 2-point loss the week before. The win also put Bayside Academy back in the playoff hunt.
“It all depends on what happens next week in Selma,” said Bayside coach Phil Lazenby. “If we win, we will be 5-2 in division and finish anywhere from second to fourth and be in the playoffs.”
The Selma Southside Panthers will enter the game 1-7, coming off a 41-14 loss to Excel Friday night.
Bayside wasted little time setting the tone against the winless Warriors. A shanked punt set up the Admirals at the Cottage Hill 16.Senior running back Joseph Stassen covered the ground in three runs to give the Admirals a 7-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the game. The next time Stassen touched the ball, it was a 22-yard scoring scamper just two minutes later.
Junior Tripp Puckett added the next two touchdowns to the scoreboard. A 7-yard run pushed the score to 21-0. A 37-yard bolt straight up the middle came with just 7 seconds left in the first quarter A missed PAT left the score 27-0.
Senior linebacker/running back Jonathon Walton broke loose around the left end and raced, virtually untouched, 49 yards to push the score to 34-0 midway through the second quarter.
The big lead signaled the end of the night for the Admiral starters. The second and third string took the field in the second half.
Junior Zachary Dyas scored on a 48-yard run on the third play of the third quarter.
A pair of Bayside fumbles gave the Warriors short fields to work with. A missed field goal ended the first drive.
Cottage Hill avoided the shutout when Jack Tardibuono escaped a tackle in the backfield to score an 11-yard touchdown.
The Admirals blocked the extra point to keep the score 41-6.
Bayside added a late score by Benjamin Hughes to cap the night’s scoring.
The Admirals averaged 10 yards per play offensively on the night. That included backup quarterback Spencer Rosenbloom kneeling for a pair of 2-yard losses to end the game.
Defensively, Bayside held the Warriors to less than 100 yards of offense. The varsity defense limited Cottage Hill to just 35 first-half yards.
And the Warriors had a pair of 20-yard runs on one second quarter drive.
