DAPHNE, Ala. — Bayside Academy's Geoffrey Stinebaugh poured in 23 of the Admirals' 55 points Thursday in his team's 55-50 senior-night home win over Cottage Hill Christian.
The Admirals now host the 3A Area 1 tournament which begins Friday.
Against Cottage Hill, Bayside built significant leads throughout the game: 28-15 at the half and 37-27 at the end of three periods. But the Warriors would not go away. Still trailing by 10 at 47-37 with just 2:21 left in the game, CHCA crept back to within two 51-49 with 20 seconds to play.
From there Stinebaugh went 4-for-4 at the free-throw line to hold off the Warrior counter attack. Overall, Bayside was 16-of-28 at the line.
Bayside coach Ralph Watson was pleased with the overall rejection of the comeback effort, but not with the late let down that led to a 5-0 run by the Warriors in less than a minute.
“We had to hold on for dear life,” Watson said. “I thought we played really hard. I'm proud of the guys, but I'm disappointed that we are not finishing things. The fourth quarter was a nightmare. We fouled them a bunch. They went to the foul line while we missed our free throws. Give credit to Cottage Hill. At the end of the third quarter and in the fourth quarter they got after us. Made us work. Geoffrey was big for us. Made five of six shots from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and that was huge.”
The Admirals' two seniors, Thomas Buchanan and Camp Campbell scored 13 and eight points each for Bayside while Nelson Newman added six. Senior cheerleader Amber Witherington was also recognized along with Campbell and Buchanan. The Lady Admirals have no senior players this season.
