Bayside Academy stops Elberta two-point try for 14-13 win

Orange Beach, Baldwin County join teams that earned first win in first try

Another game that came down to the wire was played in Elberta where the Warriors’ two-point attempt was stuffed by the Bayside Academy Admirals with 1:52 left to win the season opener 14-13 Friday night.

Elberta decided to go for the lead instead of the tie after the fourth-quarter touchdown brought its deficit to only one point with time winding down. Quarterback Hunter Powers went around the left edge but was met by a group of Bayside Academy defenders who barred him from crossing the goal line.

The visiting Admirals opened the scoring in the first quarter and the Warriors answered in the second quarter for a 7-7 halftime score. Bayside Academy’s fourth-quarter touchdown from Tait Moore, plus the extra point from Joey Jones, served as the difference-maker.

Other Baldwin County final scores

Orange Beach 28, Pensacola (FL) 20

The first win of the Jamey DuBose era took little time to arrive in Orange Beach. The Makos took to the road and earned the win over the Pensacola Tigers although the hosts nearly took it for themselves.

Orange Beach quarterback John Wallace Holladay ran for one touchdown and hit Jack Butler on a 40-yard passing hookup on top of Chris Pearson’s 2-yard touchdown rush for a 21-0 lead. The Makos also earned a blocked field goal to retain their three-possession lead going into halftime.

Pensacola stormed back in the fourth quarter with three unanswered scores of its own although missed two extra points and scored one two-point conversion.

Holladay capped things with a rushing touchdown on the first play from scrimmage after a big return from Pearson put it at the Tigers’ 35-yard line. Carter Green added the interception that Orange Beach needed to ice the game and let the clock bleed out for win No. 1.

Baldwin County 14, Davidson 10

The Tigers erased a 10-0, first-quarter deficit at home to earn their first win of 2022. Touchdowns in the second and third quarter gave Baldwin County a lead they would never relinquish.

Prattville 34, Foley 20

Foley junior receiver and Alabama commit Perry Thompson caught all three of the Lions’ touchdowns from Reece Tynes to go along with 160 yards on six catches and two pass breakups and a forced fumble although it was not quite enough for Foley to top the Prattville Lions.

Saraland 43, Daphne 23
