Bay Minette Council discusses redistricting

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Bay Minette City Council is one step closer to redistricting after Diane Burnett of South Alabama Regional Planning’s presentation during its work session Monday.

Burnett explained that 2010 census results show that the city’s five districts collectively make up a population of 8,044. According to a chart Burnett presented the council, each district should ideally contain 1,609 residents, with a workable margin of deviation.

However, it was soon realized that Burnett’s recommendations for redrawing district lines were based on an outdated map.

“This is a historical map based on ‘94 or ‘95,” Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery said.

Several council members pointed out that changes had occurred since then, deeming the map inaccurate.

“I don’t know if this map is showing all of the people in District 5,” District 5 Representative Chris Norman said, pointing to a road and subdivision he thought were missing from the map.

The council decided to revisit the subject once Burnett and City Attorney Scott Lewis get an updated map to work from, as well as suggestions posed to her by the group.

“Scotty can come back in and give us a recommendation at the next meeting in August,” Tillery said.
