Bay Minette baseball league undergoes growing pains

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Baseball

enthusiasts could soon have a little more room to play in in north

Baldwin, as the Bay Minette City Council considers how to increase

the number of baseball fields and batting cages within the county

seat.

The council discussed the issue

during its regular meeting last week, upon the request of Bay

Minette Youth Baseball representative Brandan Franklin. He explain

that the proposal was motivated by success of the athletic

program.

“This past year was probably one

of the better years we’ve had,” Franklin told the board during its

pre-meeting work session. “Participation-wise, it’s been

outstanding.”

That success also included such

achievements as various age divisions taking all-star recognition

and the high-school level team winning district competition.

Franklin said such

accomplishments have both drawn numerous participants and enabled

the baseball program to last throughout the majority of the

year.

“It’s a nine-month, pretty much

full-year deal,” he told the board.

With that growth has come a limit

in resources.

“We’ve got too many teams and not

enough spaces (to practice and play on),” Franklin said, explaining

that the youth league currently works with 27 baseball teams.

To alleviate that problem, he

suggested making changes to Halliday Park.

“We’d like to ask the city to

give us permission to take the basketball courts and convert them

into baseball cages,” Franklin told the board.

“The only thing that bothers me

is the basketball courts are used on weekends,” Bay Minette City

Councilman Mike Phillips said.

Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery

pointed out that plans are under way to add basketball courts to

the city’s universal playground.

After further discussion found

that the baseball league would incur the cost of increasing

practice space, the council asked Franklin to give them time to

look into options for relocating basketball courts before moving

ahead.
