Orange Beach and Williamson’s huge game for the lead in Class 4A Region 1 won’t have to compete with an even bigger – in some circles – event when President Donald Trump’s entourage sweeps into Mobile on Oct. 2.
The school announced the game, which is being tabbed as the biggest in Orange Beach football history, will move to Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. at Williamson.
“Undefeated v. undefeated playing for a piece of the region championship,” Orange Beach head coach Wade Waldrop said. “I think it's a really good measuring stick game in terms of where we stack up with the rest of the teams in the state.”
He last used the “measuring stick” analogy when another Class 4A Region 1 power came to Orange Beach bringing a roster dotted with players heading to D-I schools. The Makos took a thrilling, last-second 21-19 win over Vigor when highly touted freshman lineman Amarie Trammell knocked down a pass on a two-point try.
With Williamson, now 2-0 in the region and 4-0 overall, another roster of top recruits awaits, but this time the game’s in Mobile. Either Orange Beach (6-0, 3-0) or the Lions will be undefeated and atop the standings after Thursday's game.
“They’re loaded,” Waldrop said. “And they do a good job coaching them.”
Defensive stars having outstanding seasons will be lining up opposite Orange Beach sophomore quarterback Tucker Wade, including a four-star Florida commit in linebacker Ellis McGaskin.
“We’ve had this one marked on the calendar for quite a while,” Wade said. “We’ve been watching tape and they do have some very good defensive players. Their corners, their safeties, all around the board great athletes.”
Wade said the challenge is formidable but one he’s ready to face.
“They’re a very, very, very talented team,” Wade said. “But I also believe in my guys and what our coaches have for us. I think we can go out there and perform.”
McGaskin, a 6-1, 215-pounder, is just the third leading tackler for the Lions. According to stats from MaxPreps, he’s averaging 8.8 tackles per game.
Fellow linebacker Jamarcus Lett leads the way with 10.5 tackles per game followed by defensive lineman Demarcus Dale-Brown at 9.3, including a total of 6.5 sacks on the season.
Mako junior tight end/linebacker Lee Steele, a three-star recruit being courted by several SEC schools, says the Lions defensive talent can raise eyebrows but their offense will present challenges as well.
“They have about six guys on the defensive side and will be a big test for our offense going against those guys,” Steele said. “They can be explosive on offense and our defense is just going to have to stand tall.”
Williamson quarterback Thaddeus Wilder completes 61 percent of his passes and has thrown for six touchdowns this season, completing 35-of-57 for 693 yards. He has also tossed a pair of picks.
Running back Nathaniel Mitchell is averaging 123 yards a game rushing and is approaching 500 yards through just four games on 48 carries.
Top receiver Jakenyon Allen averages 82 receiving yards per game and has four touchdowns to his credit, including three on receptions for 246 yards in just three games played.
For Orange Beach, Wade has completed 63-of-90 attempts for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns through six games, although he didn’t attempt a pass against Francis Marion in the Makos last outing. He’s thrown one pick and also has 127 yards rushing with one touchdown.
Senior Verchaun Simms has been Wade's favorite target, catching 22 of those balls for seven touchdowns, including a 74-yarder against Vigor. Stacked up behind him are senior Anthony Hawkins with 11 receptions and Steele and Jackson Mann with 10 each.
Three players have contributed about 120 rushing yards each on the season, led by Wade with 127 yards, junior Deundrea Gray and freshman Jace Kidd with 122 each.
On defense, Simms has four interceptions to his name while Steele and fellow senior Turner Tillman each have four sacks.
John Watters Gentry and Luke Reed are tackling leaders with 8.4 per game each, followed by Tillman at six per game.
