A culinary showdown is coming to the Gulf Coast just in time to kick off Super Bowl festivities.
The Sea Glass Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to providing hope to the homeless, is hosting its inaugural "Battle of the Bowls" food cookoff on Sunday, Feb. 9, at The Gulf, 27500 Perdido Beach Blvd., Orange Beach.
The event promises a day of food, drinks and entertainment, offering attendees the chance to "pre-game before the Big Game" while raising money for a worthy cause. From noon to 3 p.m., competitors will showcase their best creations — with the only rule being that everything must be served in a bowl.
"We are so excited to be hosting our first big 'fun-raiser' event of the year to help us with our mission in partnership with Hangout Hospitality Group and Sunny 105.7 Radio," said Penny Hughey, director of community development with The Sea Glass Initiative and Lee Charities. "Come pre-game with us before the big game on Sunday, Feb. 9, where a variety of local cooking teams will be cooking up delectable delights that must be served in a bowl in the inaugural Battle of the Bowls challenge! It will be a great way to kick off the day while waiting to watch the big game on TV later that evening."
Categories include Best Entrée, Best Dessert, the People's Choice Award, Best Use of Halls Sausage and the "Thinking Out of the Bowl" prize for the most creative dish. Cash prizes await the winners, and for just $25, guests can enjoy unlimited tastings of these inventive creations.
Proceeds from the event will support The Sea Glass Initiative's ongoing mission to assist the homeless across the Gulf Coast. According to Hughey, "sea glass is formed when broken and shattered glass finds its way into the sea where it is then tumbled by the waves and sand and transformed into something beautiful again. The Sea Glass Initiative was formed to help individuals in Baldwin County whose lives have been shattered like broken glass leaving them homeless to help them transform their life back into something meaningful again by getting them back into stable housing.
"We meet with each unhoused individual one on one to hear their story and figure out how we can best help them put their life back together again. The majority of people we are helping are long term residents of Baldwin County, they are our neighbors who have come upon hard times and just need a helping hand."
Cooking teams interested in competing can register for $100, which includes a requirement to provide 150 small samples or about three gallons of their dish. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, starting at $150.
