ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The games will go on, says Danny Martin, Parks and Recreation Superintendent for the City of Orange Beach.
But not before Martin has to go to his plan ‘B.’
"We have a series of USSSA tournaments and they have their World Series here in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Foley," Martin said Monday. "Because of the various age groups and size of the tournaments it starts Wednesday with coach-pitch, seven- and eight-year-olds. After that tournament, other age groups will be coming here so there will be baseball here up until August."
Martin believe had hoped the games would go on as scheduled at the Orange Beach Sportsplex despite the ongoing battle against a stubborn wildfire in adjacent woods. But late Tuesday afternoon it was decided Orange Beach wouldn't have any games until Friday.
"They did the back burns around the Sportsplex and this being the command post, this is probably the safest place in the city," he said. "Everything around here is burned off. We just hope that the smoke gets out of here. That’s the main thing."
The smoke was not expected to be minimized enough by then to allow games to be played in the Sportsplex.
Martin has confidence in the crews battling the fires.
"The chief and state forestry, they have their plans," he said. "They know that this is going on.
"We do have a plan B. If it affects us so much here that it is a problem, we will play in Gulf Shores. They have an additional field we can use."
