Baseball expansion request hits a home run

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Bay Minette’s baseball enthusiasts will soon have a little more room to play, thanks to the City Council.

During its inaugural meeting of 2012 Monday, the council approved the Bay Minette Youth Baseball League’s request to add additional batting cages and practices space at Halliday Park.
The vote came after league representative Brandan Frankin approached the council last month with the request, explaining that the league would take responsibility for costs associated with the endeavor.
Following discussion at last month’s meeting, the council asked for time to give it consideration.
Prior to Monday’s vote, the council discussed how the expansion would affect  basketball courts, which would be turned into baseball-practice space. That discussion resulted in the council deciding to add additional space for that sport at either Halliday, itself, or at the park near the city’s pool.
“It’s less expensive to move basketball goals,” Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery said during the council’s work session.
Further discussion brought up concern about the control of foul language at the parks. Tillery offered a solution.
“Signs concerning language will be mounted onto the batting cages,” she said.
Safety at the parks was also discussed Monday. Solutions included moving the fence at Halliday Park and having Bay Minette Police officers monitor the parks.
