Catherine Glasgow Barrett, 90, died Friday, April 10, 2009 at Catherine Place in Daphne after a brief illness.
She was born in Heflin, Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama, where she was an officer in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
Widowed by only 54 days, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James “Bill” Edward Barrett Jr.
They moved to Fairhope in 1947 to live on the Auburn Agricultural Substation. The Barretts were lifelong members of the First Baptist Church of Fairhope.
She retired from the public school system after 40 years of service. She is dearly remembered as the “favorite teacher” of many in the sixth and eighth grades. She was also a high school guidance councilor. She was the director of the Baldwin County Vocational Association. She was co-founder of the Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s honorary sorority. Her walls at home are covered in plaques, honors, awards and gratitudes.
Survivors include three sons, Jim (Claudia) Barrett of Gainesville, Fla., Donnie Hatchett (Lottie) Barrett of Fairhope and Ron Glasgow (Jim) Barrett of Daphne; two granddaughters, Shelby Barrett (Chris) Murphree of Ft. Smith, Arl., and Hannah (Cara) Barrett of Durham, N.C.; many other relatives, friends and former students.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 18 at the Barrett home on West Washington Drive. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19 at the Montrose Cemetery.
