Donald A. Barner, 74, born June 16, 1934 in Doylestown, Pa., a longtime resident of Hopewell, N.J., and Boydton, Va., and a resident Foley, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at his home.

He was the son of Abram and Della Geddes Barner. He attended Trenton, N.J., public schools and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Bernita Claussen July 2, 1954 in California.

Following his military service, he began work for New Jersey Bell and retired from AT & T after more than 30 years employment. He was a member of the National Association of Power Engineers of which he also served as president. He enjoyed boating and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Barner.

Survivors include his wife, Bernita Barner of Foley; son, Jeff (Patricia) Barner of New Jersey; daughter, Susan Barner; two grandchildren, Rebecca Barner and Jeff Barner Jr., also of New Jersey; brother, John Harold Barner of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Virginia Trego of Fairhope and Hazel Leung of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; a nephew and several nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 26 at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church. A private interment will be held at a later date in Pennington, N.J.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Legion National Emergency Fund.

Cremation arrangements are by Cason Funeral Service, Foley.
