Banana bar at the beach: Sweets Ahoy opens in Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES — Sweets Ahoy Banana Bar has opened at the beach as a new frozen treat spot right in the heat of the summer season.

According to general manager Lucas Salcedo, the idea for a banana shop came from his uncle who intended to open a candy shop in town until he visited Nigel’s Bananas located in the 30A stretch of the Florida Panhandle, which he loved so much that he decided to open a banana bar instead.

Sweets Ahoy, located at 112 W. Beach Blvd., features bananas and cheesecake slices dipped in chocolate and covered with toppings, whether it be sprinkles, Oreo crumbs, peanuts or toasted coconut, along with chocolate or strawberry syrup. They also have a menu of flavors, such as “Parrot’s Plunder,” dipped in white chocolate and topped with Fruity Pebbles and a strawberry drizzle, and “Bonfire S’mores,” which is covered with chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers.

Along with frozen treats, they also have a shelf full of craft sodas available to purchase individually or in a build-your-own style six-pack.

Sweets Ahoy Banana Bar is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight.
