Posted

Under the direction of Wayne Fillingim, the Baldwin Pops Band will present the annual John Allen Memorial Scholarship Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at Trojan Hall, located at Daphne High School in Daphne.

The Baldwin Pops Band sponsors an annual scholarship contest for high school seniors from Baldwin County who plan to continue their musical involvement in college. Band directors from all high schools in Baldwin County are invited to nominate their students to perform with the band and compete for scholarships. Eleven students from Daphne High School, Fairhope High School, Robertsdale High School, and Spanish Fort are participating in 2023.

These students are:

  • Ashleigh Kiesel, flute, Daphne High School
  • Kayin Hardy, trombone, Daphne High School
  • Olivia Tures, flute, Daphne High School
  • Ryan Perry, trumpet, Daphne High School
  • Carolyn Lippold, clarinet, Fairhope High School
  • JW Hurley, tuba, Fairhope High School
  • Ryder Wilkins, trumpet, Fairhope High School
  • Dominick Williams, french horn, Robertsdale High School
  • Julia Wofford, clarinet, Robertsdale High School
  • Aubrey Fagan, bass clarinet, Spanish Fort High School
  • Haley Childress, clarinet, Spanish Fort High School

When he passed away 20 years ago, in April of 2003, at age 80, John Allen was the oldest member of the Baldwin Pops. He started playing tuba at the age of 74 with the band at Fairhope Middle School. He progressed with his band class and continued playing with them until his death. John Allen not only became a student of the tuba, he became an inspiration to his fellow students. When the Baldwin Pops Band formed in 1997, Allen became a charter member. The scholarship fund was named in his memory.

Music selections for the concert include the following:

  • "Festive Overture" by Dmitri Shostakovich
  • "On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss" by David Holsinger
  • "Our Castaways" by Julie Giroux
  • "Rolling Thunder March" by Henry Fillmore
  • "The Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Phillip Sousa
  • "The Witch and the Saint" by Steven Reineke
  • "Third Symphony" (movements 3 and 4) by James Barnes
