The Baldwin Pops Band, under the direction of Wayne Fillingim, will present its annual John Allen Memorial Scholarship Concerts with two performances in March.
The first will be at 7 pm Monday, March 16, at Daphne Civic Center, 2603 US Hwy. 98, Daphne. The second, where scholarship winners will be announced, is scheduled for 7 pm Wednesday, March 18, at Orange Beach Performing Arts Center, 23908 Canal Road, Orange Beach.
The concerts, featuring a Fiesta theme with Spanish-inspired music, will include selections such as "Zacatecas Mexican March" by Genaro Codina, "Gypsy Dance" from "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, "La Mezquita de Cordoba" by Julie Giroux, "El Camino Real" by Alfred Reed, "Suite from Man of La Mancha" by Mitch Lee, and "La Fiesta Mexicana" by H. Owen Reed.
The scholarship program, sponsored by the Baldwin Pops Band for more than 20 years, supports high school seniors from Baldwin County pursuing music in college. Local band directors nominate students to perform with the Pops and compete for scholarships. Sixteen students from Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Orange Beach, and Spanish Fort high schools are participating in 2026:
The scholarship honors John Allen, the oldest member of the Baldwin Pops, who passed away in April 2003 at age 80. Allen began playing tuba at age 74 in the 6th grade band at Fairhope Middle School and continued through high school. He became a charter member of the Baldwin Pops Band when it formed in 1997 and inspired fellow musicians with his dedication. The scholarship fund was created in his memory.
Concerts are free and sponsored by the host cities. Donations to the John Allen Memorial Scholarship may be made at each performance or by mail to Baldwin Pops Band, P.O. Box 38, Fairhope, AL 36533.
