The Baldwin Pops Band, under the direction of Wayne Fillingim, is set to captivate audiences with an outdoor concert scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 23. The event will take place at the scenic pond behind the Spanish Fort Community Center, situated at 7361 Spanish Fort Boulevard in Spanish Fort.
The concert will showcase musical pieces with thematic connections to the month of March, explored in three distinct ways. The repertoire includes renditions of traditional military marches by composers such as John Philip Sousa, Edwin Franko Goldman, Kenneth J. Alford, and Karl L. King. Additionally, Peter Tschaikowsky's "Marche Slave," composed 150 years ago as a tribute to wounded soldiers, will be performed. The Irish influence on March will be celebrated through performances of "Irish Tune from County Derry" and "Molly on the Shore" by Percy Aldridge Grainger. Furthermore, in a nod to the basketball frenzy of "March Madness," selections like Karl L. King's "Aces of the Air" and Edwin Franko Goldman's "Onward - Upward" will be featured.
Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating and are welcome to bring picnic suppers to enjoy during the performance. Following intermission, children will have the opportunity to participate in a march parade. The Checkered Tablecloth Award will be bestowed upon the individual or group with the most creatively arranged picnic setup.
