FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Dr. Roger Jones will conduct The Baldwin Pops Band in a concert titled “Musical Landscapes” on Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., at the Fairhope Civic Center.

As always, the Pops Band concert is free.

The band will perform music representing or evoking landscapes across the United States, England and Mars.

French hornist Susan Unger will be the featured soloist performing the first movement of Mozart’s “Horn Concerto No. 3,” arranged for band by Jones.

Unger is adjunct instructor of French horn at the University of Mobile and has been a member of the Baldwin Pops Band for five years.

A partial list of selections that the band will play includes “American Folk Rhapsody” by Clare E. Grundman; “Bright Lights on Broadway,” arranged by John Higgins; “Chicago” by Fred Fisher; “Miami March” by Henry Fillmore; “The Muir Woods” by Roger Jones; “Nimrod” by Sir Edward Elgar; and “Mars” by Gustav Holst.

Jones, who has a Ph.D. in music theory/composition from the University of Miami, has been a member of the Baldwin Pops Band since 2003 when he retired from a 30-year career as a college professor, conductor, composer and professional musician, most of which he continues to do in retirement.

In addition to local sponsors, the city of Fairhope and the Baldwin County Commission, the Baldwin Pops Band is sponsored by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

Information on the Baldwin Pops concert schedule can be found on the band’s new Web site, www.baldwinpopsband.com, or by calling (251) 928-3754 or (251) 987-5757.
