FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Baldwin Pops Band awarded John Allen Memorial Scholarships to four graduating seniors on April 27 at the Daphne Civic Center.
Each high school band director was invited to nominate seniors to play with the Pops Band and 16 students from six high schools participated.
Based on information submitted by students and recommendations by their band directors, a scholarship committee selected four students to receive this scholarship: Shawn Wright, trumpet, from Daphne High School; Stephanie Woods, french horn, from Foley High School; Madi Kreamer, oboe, from Gulf Shores High School; and Justin Butcher, tuba, from Robertsdale High School.
This scholarship is named after John Allen who was a charter member of the Baldwin Pops Band, who took up tuba at age 74 and played until his death at age 80.
At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the band and an inspiration to the band students at Fairhope Middle School, where he practiced.
Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible contribution for the scholarship fund can do so by sending a check to Baldwin Pops Inc., P.O. Box 38, Fairhope, AL 36533.
