FAIRHOPE — Although, the Baldwin all-stars didn't win Friday, it was the first time in history that they didn't lose. The Mobile boys rallied to tie Baldwin 2-2 with 25 seconds left in the boys 5th annual Battle of the Bay Charity Soccer Showcase at W.C. Majors Field at Fairhope Municipal Stadium.
It looked like the Baldwin team was locked in for a 2-1 win but, with two-dozen seconds to go McGill-Toolen Catholic's Trace Brown finished a ball from Nick Butler of Satsuma for the tie.
"It was a great goal at the end, a great game and it's for a great cause," said Mobile coach Pete Fuller of the University of Mobile. "I just thought it was a terrific game. There were some really good individual performances by a number of players tonight. It was an exciting one. I've been in a bunch of these and this might have been the most exciting. I don't think the soccer was necessarily the best. I think we've had some better games in terms of purely the game itself. The kids played really hard and the Baldwin County kids did a great job getting themselves back in the game. To be fair, most of the second half (they) were the better team tonight," he added. "It's interesting how it goes. I thought the first half we were probably the better team. It all evens out."
Mobile struck first when Josh Harrelson of St. Paul's Episcopal put Mobile up a 1-0 lead on a header with 16 minutes left in the half.
Jorge Santa Maria of Foley then tied the game on a header from about 18 yards out with just 43 seconds left in the half to make it 1-1 at the break. Santa-Maria almost scored again before the half off a set play from Foley teammate Bryant Lopez.
Baldwin took the lead 2-1 with 14 minutes to go in the match when Christian Jarvis of Gulf Shores put Baldwin in front with a header off a head flick from Santa-Maria connecting a long throw-in from Hails Seawell of Daphne.
"It was exciting and fun, and heartbreaking." said Baldwin coach Tim Brooks, of Spring Hill College. "I felt like we had the game, but it's an all-star game and funny things happen. It was definitely enjoyable from both sides."
The Baldwin Boys Roster included Tim Ng, Jackson McBride, Chris Ives, Ryan Owens, Hails Seawell, Dalton Pierce, Josh Harper, Austin Fiddler, Bobby Douglass, Ian Dingwall, Chad Dolan, Michael Keyser, Jorge Santa Maria, Bryant Lopez, Nick Anagnostopulos, Christian Jarvis, Cliff McGonigal, Fernando Gamez, Jesse Strader, Colby Norman, Tanner Grider and TJ Wadriski. Invited but unable to play was Patrick Marsh.
