LOXLEY — A Loxley man who was killed Sunday in a single-vehicle crash on Truck Trail 17, 10 miles north of Loxley, was initially the passenger when the vehicle was stopped by Silverhill Police.

According to a release issued Sunday by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Mobile Post, Chad Cullen Childress, 33, was attempting to elude police after fleeing from a previous traffic stop when the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer he was driving left the road, struck a tree and overturned at approximately 2:55 p.m.

Childress was the passenger in the vehicle when it was stopped for a routine traffic violation between 2 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the corner of County Road 49 and Woodpecker Lane in Silverhill, said Silverhill Police Chief Kim Wasdin.

The driver of the vehicle, Anthony Brock Jr., 38, of Silverhill was arrested and booked on felony failure to appear charges, Wasdin said. He is currently in jail without bond.

While Brock was in the process of being arrested, Wasdin said, Childress jumped behind the wheel and fled the scene.

The chase was reportedly picked up by Loxley Police and Childress the vehicle would later crash on Truck Trail 17, a dirt road north of Loxley. Childress was reportedly not using a seat belt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Catherine Green, was wearing her seat belt and received no reported injuries, according to Trooper Jamie Maloy with ALEA’s Public Information and Education Unit.

“As far as we can tell, neither Silverhill nor Loxley police had any direct contact with the vehicle,” Maloy said. “At this time we are treating this as a single-vehicle accident.”

Wasdin said Childress had an outstanding warrant for a misdemeanor traffic violation in Foley.

The Baldwin County Department of Corrections website shows Childress, who is listed as a Silverhill resident on the site, has 12 arrests dating back to 2001. The last arrest on the site was recorded on June 2 when Childress was charged with possession of a controlled substance, receiving stolen property, 3rd degree, possession of a concealed weapon without a permit and public intoxication. He was booked on a $500 bond and records show he was released June 22.

Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
