There are several region games on tonight's slate of high school football games involving Baldwin County teams, but no game is bigger than the battle between the Daphne Trojans and McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets at Lipscomb Stadium in Mobile.
The Trojans (8-0, 6-0) are ranked No. 1 in Class 6A and are riding a 23-game win streak that includes last year's 6A state championship. The No. 6 Yellow Jackets (8-0, 6-0) have had a remarkable season after former Daphne defensive coordinator Bart Sessions took the reins as head coach in the spring.
The 6A Region 2 title, currently held by Daphne, is on the line tonight. The Yellow Jackets would love nothing more than to spoil Daphne's plans of another undefeated regular season, and they believe that Sessions is the right coach to help them do it.
In other games involving Baldwin teams, Robertsdale visits Baldwin County High for a game between two 1-7 teams, Bayside Academy hosts Excel with a 9-0 record in the Admirals' sights, Fairhope hosts Williamson, Foley hosts Satsuma for homecoming, Gulf Shores hosts Faith Academy and Spanish Fort travels to Citronelle.
Daphne at McGill-Toolen: The 6A Region 2 championship and an unbeaten record are on the line tonight as No. 1 Daphne visits No. 6 McGill-Toolen tonight in a game that will be televised locally on UTV-44 and broadcast on the radio by WNSP 105.5. Daphne has powered through its schedule, averaging 41.5 points per game while giving up just 12.5, and is coming off a huge win over rival Fairhope last week. McGill, under the direction of former Daphne defensive coordinator Bart Sessions, is averaging 32.9 points while giving up 13.3 per game. A visit to Lipscomb Stadium is tough, as the McGill student section is one of the most vocal and supportive in this part of the state. Daphne has played under the "bright lights" before and has come out on top. Prediction: Daphne 28, McGill-Toolen 17.
Robertsdale at Baldwin County: This could be one of the more entertaining games of the night, as two 1-7 teams with wins over Satsuma square off at Simmons Field in Bay Minette. Robertsdale has been close to winning several more games this season, but bad luck, tough calls and other issues have hampered the Bears. Baldwin County broke its 19-game losing streak with a win over Satsuma last week. This one will be close. Prediction: Robertsdale 24, BCHS 21.
Williamson at Fairhope: The Fairhope Pirates (6-2, 4-2) host Williamson (3-5, 3-3) in the 6A Region 2 finale tonight at W.C. Majors Field. Fairhope has clinched a playoff spot, but Williamson can still get in if it beats Fairhope and Satsuma tops Foley. That's a tall order, but stranger things have happened before. The Pirates need to rebound after a tough loss to rival Daphne last week. Prediction: Fairhope 38, Williamson 24.
Satsuma at Foley: The Foley Lions (5-3, 3-3) host the Satsuma Gators (0-8, 0-6) for homecoming tonight at Ivan Jones Stadium. The Lions can clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Gators, who have only scored 47 points all season long. Foley's Kalif Koen could break the Lions career yardage record tonight. Prediction: Foley 42, Satsuma 0.
Faith Academy at Gulf Shores: The Gulf Shores Dolphins (4-4, 1-4) look to close out their home schedule on a high note against Faith Academy (1-7, 1-4) tonight at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. The Dolphins have had an up and down season, while Faith Academy has struggled from the get go. Prediction: Gulf Shores 27, Faith Academy 14.
Spanish Fort at Citronelle: Spanish Fort (5-3, 3-2) looks to pick up a third 5A Region 1 win at Citronelle (2-6, 1-4) tonight. The Toros have to rebound after a 7-0 loss to Vigor last week. Prediction: Spanish Fort 31, Citronelle 10.
Excel at Bayside Academy: Class 3A No. 1 Bayside Academy (8-0, 6-0) has already clinched the 3A Region 1 title for the first time in school history. The Admirals host Excel (3-5, 1-5) tonight in hopes that they can keep their unbeaten record alive going into the last week of the season. The Admirals have an explosive offense that is scoring 37.8 points per game, while Excel gives up 27.3 points per contest. Prediction: Bayside Academy 41, Excel
