SUMMERDALE, Alabama — Baldwin EMC’s Operation Round Up Board of Directors made surprise visits to some of Baldwin County’s schools and recognized their first year Star Light Award recipients. And fortunately for some lucky teachers, they came bearing gifts which totaled nearly $10,000.
Armed with an over-sized check and balloons, grants were awarded to 12 teachers. The successful applicants were chosen based on projects aimed at improving learning through a specific lesson using innovative or creative techniques. Each teacher submitted a budget with a list of itemized expense s for consideration of grants up to $1,000 each.
The winning teachers were:
• Elizabeth Childs, Daphne Elementary, $399.95.
• Gail Filotei, Daphne High School, $570.83.
• Gerri McDonald, Perdido Elementary, $1,000.
• Gail Richerson, Bay Minette Intermediate, $1,000.
• Patti Cooper, Elsanor School, $520.51.
• Susan Loy, Foley Elementary, $991.15.
• Yonna Fogle, Robertsdale Elementary, $1,000.
• Kimberly Hollis, Orange Beach Elementary, $705.55.
• Alice Gillen, Gulf Shores Elementary, $1,000.
• Victoria Roberson, Gulf Shores Elementary, $437.47.
• Renee Phelps, Summerdale School, $620.
• Richard McCracken, Foley High School, $999.70.
“We are excited to be able to help our local teachers and students,” said Katie Warren, chairman of Baldwin EMC’s Operation Round Up Board of Directors. “This is what Operation Round Up is all about, improving the quality of life within our community.”
Baldwin EMC’s Operation Round Up program is made possible through contributions from members who voluntarily round up their electric bills each month. This small change collectively makes significant differences in other people’s lives by assisting with food, clothing, health, education, environment and shelter needs. The Star Light Awards were made available under the education category.
