GCM Staff Report
Alabama residents who plan to vote in the Aug. 11 special primary election must register by Monday, July 27, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office.
All of Baldwin County is located in Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, one of four congressional districts participating in the special primary. The election also will be held in the 2nd, 6th and 7th congressional districts. In District 1, four Repblicans are vying for the nomination. There is one Democrat who qualified, so there will be no Democratic ballot for this primary.
Alabamians do not declare a party when registering to vote, so any eligible voter can participate in this election.
In a news release, state election officials are encouraging eligible voters to register or verify their voter registration status before the deadline.
“I encourage all eligible Alabamians living in congressional districts 1, 2, 6, or 7 to register to vote or verify their voter registration status on AlabamaVotes.gov ahead of the Aug. 11 special primary election,” Secretary of State Wes Allen said in the release. “I also want to thank Alabama’s dedicated local election officials for their hard work preparing for this election.”
Electronic voter registration is available at
www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/register-to-vote. Paper voter registration forms may be submitted in person or mailed to a local Board of Registrars office.
To be eligible to vote in Alabama, an individual must be a U.S. citizen, reside in Alabama and be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day. Voters also must not be disqualified because of a felony conviction and must not have been declared mentally incompetent by a court.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters casting ballots at a polling place or by absentee ballot must present a valid form of photo identification.
Voters planning to cast an absentee ballot should note several upcoming deadlines. County absentee election managers must receive mail-in absentee ballot applications by Aug. 4. The deadline to return an absentee ballot application in person is Aug. 6.
Completed absentee ballots returned in person must be received by the county absentee election manager by the close of business Aug. 10, the day before the election. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received no later than noon on Election Day, Aug. 11.
Allen encouraged voters to submit absentee ballot applications and completed ballots well in advance of the deadlines. Election officials recommend mailing absentee ballot applications and ballots at least two weeks before the applicable deadline to ensure timely delivery.
As with in-person voting, voters requesting an absentee ballot must present a valid form of photo identification.
