Baldwin County Tigers survive at McGill

MOBILE, Ala. — Two by Two. The Baldwin County Tigers scored a pair in the first and a pair in the ninth to get a 4-2, extra-inning win in the final and deciding game over McGill-Toolen Catholic in a 6A second round series at Lipscomb Field Wednesday night.

Jordan Ebert's bases-loaded hit drove in J.A. Harville and Billy Johnstone to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning that had held since the fifth.

"Everything happens for a reason," said Ebert, a junior utility infielder/outfielder who holds the BCHS career home-run record. "And this was just a blessing for us. It's funny, I was in the same situation a couple of years ago with a little different outcome. But, Chris Andreoli and Kheyton Byrd threw great for us tonight and kept giving us chances and finally we broke through. God just helped us out at the end and we're ready for round three."

The Tigers will host Prattville in the state quarterfinals at Bay Minette after two rounds on the road. Byrd got a no-decision after starting and holding the Yellow Jackets to two runs on five hits through five innings. Andreoli came on and held McGill to two hits and no runs for four innings and the win in relief.

BCHS coach Peter Bezeredi was proud of his team for not giving up.

"This team never quits. I'm just so proud of them for being so tough to hang in there and keep believing in themselves. Neither team deserved to lose tonight. It just makes me proud to be a baseball coach. This is what high school baseball is all about. I'm really really proud of Chris and Kheyton, our senior pitchers, for keeping us close and Jordan for that clutch hit."

The Tigers had 11 hits on the night.
