SPANISH FORT, Alabama - The Baldwin County Tigers won two games on Tuesday on the second day of pool play in the Mobile BayBears Hank Aaron Classic high school baseball tournament at Spanish Fort High School.
The Tigers (2-1) defeated Foley (1-2) 12-2 Tuesday afternoon, then outlasted two-time defending 5A champion Spanish Fort (0-3) 14-9 in nine innings in the nightcap. The Tigers dropped the season opener against Robertsdale on Monday.
"I'm really proud of the way my boys bounced back after a real tough loss Monday," Baldwin County head coach Peter Bezeredi said. "We just found a way to win both games. I'm proud of my team, we are starting to find a little bit of identity, of who we are going to be this year."
In the nightcap, the Tigers rallied from a 6-1 deficit and took a 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Tucker Miller. Spanish Fort tied the game at 7 with an RBI single from Shane English in the bottom of the sixth.
In the eighth, Billy Johnstone drove in Miller with a single, then Buzz Cabaniss scored from third on a throwing error to give the Tigers a 9-7 lead. The Toros scored two in the bottom of the inning when Tate Godwin sent a deep fly ball to center that was mishandled by BCHS.
In the ninth, BCHS scored two runs on a Toro infield error, then Kyle Buck sent two runs home with a triple. Buck then scored the Tigers' final run on a passed ball.
"Every year you have to see if your team is going to be mentally tough enough to handle adversity," Bezeredi said. "We had some things go bad wrong and we proved to ourselves that we can come back from anything. Some teams can't come back, but we proved tonight that we are able to come back."
Jake Swearingen got the win in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Brandon Goins pitched a scoreless ninth and picked up the save for the Tigers.
Against Foley, the Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and added three in the second. Swearingen had a two-run homerun and Miller picked up the win.
All participating teams will play seeded games at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile Thursday through Saturday. The schedule will be set after Wednesday's pool play games.
