Baldwin County students sing their way to scholarship dollars

The sun was shining Saturday as Singing for Scholarships returned to the main stage at the Annual National Shrimp Festival.

This year's first place winner of a $1,000 scholarship had the home turf advantage. Maura Hawkins of Gulf Shores High School not only took first place, but she also won her school's music program $500.

Second place and a $500 scholarship went to Victoria Holley from Spanish Fort High School. Third place and a $250 scholarship went to Luiza Salazar from Orange Beach High School. The music programs at their respective schools will also receive $500.

This year 10 additional prizes of $50 cash were awarded to participants in categories that included spirit award, fashionista, best smile, best high note and more.

The Shrimp Festival Singing for Scholarships event was created in 2013 to support local Baldwin County High Schools and the talented youth in the region. The singing competition features students chosen to represent their high school. Opportunities are also available for private school and home-schooled students.
