Baldwin County Sheriff's Office still investigating Feb. 13 shot fired at Elberta Police Chief

Foley, Ala. - The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office has taken over investigation of the Feb. 13 incident at the Elberta police station in which a suspect fired a single shot at Elberta Police Chief Mickey Pledger, and Baldwin County Major Anthony Lowry said there are no updates in the investigation.

"There is no update on the investigation at this time," he said, noting the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation. "It is an active investigation and investigators have been in and around Elberta all week."

Lowry said Pledger was retrieving a file from his vehicle at the station when the incident occurred. Pledger spotted a person standing in the backyard area of the building with his back turned to the officer. When Pledger asked the man what he was doing, the suspect turned and fired a shot.

Pledger fired one in response, but the suspect fled from the scene and there was no evidence that Pledger's shot hit the suspect. Pledger also does not know the direction of the suspect's shot, but it did strike the police building.

"The chief said he was last seen running west from the police department although canines failed to find a track," Lowry said.

The suspect is described as a white or light-skinned Hispanic male wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and a black knit. Lowry said there is no update on what the suspect may look like beyond it being a white or hispanic male wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and a black knit cap.

"We're actively working on the investigation," Lowry said.

The Foley Police Department responded to the incident, as did other agencies, Foley Police Chief David Wilson said, noting the state trooper helicopter was called in.

"We assisted on backup and setting up perimeter and search for the subject," he said.

If anyone has information on the identity or whereabouts of the suspect or any information regarding the incident, contact the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office at 251-937-0202.
