Baldwin County prepares for 39th Annual MLK Celebration focused on community strength

Baldwin County will observe the 39th Annual Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration from Saturday, Jan. 17, through Monday, Jan. 19, calling residents to embrace the theme “Strengthen Our Communities.”

Organized by the Baldwin County MLK Celebration Committee, the three-day observance is designed to renew the county’s commitment to unity, justice and collective action through worship, service, education and civic engagement.

The weekend’s signature event, the Annual MLK Memorial March, will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19. Participants will gather at Beulah Park, also known as Beulah Height Park, in Foley and walk to the Foley Civic Center for a commemorative program focused on reflection, service and ongoing efforts toward equality. Attorney Fred Gray Jr. will deliver the keynote address. He is the son of Fred Gray Sr., the legendary civil rights attorney who served as legal counsel to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and numerous landmark civil rights cases.

A countywide worship and keynote program is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at Fairhope United Methodist Church, 155 South Section St., Fairhope. The keynote speaker will be Justice Pam Baschab, a nationally recognized Alabama attorney known for historic legal achievements and a lifelong commitment to justice. She is the daughter of a former Foley police chief, the first attorney to defeat a sitting judge in the county and a figure whose real-life legal work was depicted in the motion picture "Just Mercy." Organizers said her appearance brings a personal connection to Baldwin County’s history while underscoring the weekend’s focus on community strength.

The celebration begins Saturday, Jan. 17, with the MLK Job Fair and Youth Symposium from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Foley High School, One Pride Place, Foley. The student-centered event will feature career opportunities, workforce development resources, youth leadership programming and discussions on civic engagement.

The MLK Celebration Committee is seeking sponsorships from businesses, faith groups, civic organizations and individuals to keep all events free and accessible. Contributions will support youth programs and scholarships, march logistics and transportation, event meals, educational materials, printed programs and cultural presentations. Sponsorship packages include public recognition, program listings, digital outreach and opportunities for deeper involvement.

Residents throughout Baldwin County and surrounding communities are invited to attend events, volunteer and participate in the march as a tribute to King’s legacy and the shared responsibility to strengthen local communities.
