Baldwin County nonprofits are making strides in closing the opportunity gap for local youth with significant new funding from the Community Foundation of South Alabama.

The Community Foundation of South Alabama has awarded $383,277 in grants to 36 nonprofit organizations across its eight-county region in Southwest Alabama, aiming to close the opportunity gap among local youth. The grants support programs focusing on mental and behavioral health, education, family support, racial equity and arts and culture.

Notable among the 2024 Closing the Opportunity Gap grantees are three organizations in Baldwin County: the Dream Center of Baldwin County, the South Baldwin Literacy Council and the Eastern Shore Art Center.
Rebecca Byrne, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of South Alabama, emphasized the foundation's commitment to empowering young minds.

"We remain steadfast in our support of nonprofits and programs dedicated to our local youth because we believe in the power of young minds to transform our community," Byrne said in a news release. "By investing in their growth and potential, we are building a foundation for a brighter future for all."

The Dream Center of Baldwin County, located in Foley, provides vital support to at-risk youth through education, advocacy and mentorship. Partnering with local schools and the juvenile justice system, the center aims to redirect youth from delinquent behavior with programs in conflict resolution, drug and alcohol education, and workforce readiness. The Eastern Shore Art Center in Fairhope has served as a cultural hub since 1952, connecting people of all ages and abilities with the arts through education, exhibitions and outreach. The center boasts five galleries and four art instruction studios, offering hundreds of classes and multiple exhibits annually featuring local, regional and national artists. Established in 1983, the South Baldwin Literacy Council offers a wide range of educational services to Baldwin County residents.
