Tonight’s slate of Baldwin County high school football features several key region games between high-powered teams.
Defending 5A champion Spanish Fort looks to keep its name in the running for home field advantage in the playoffs as it hosts the Vigor Wolves. Both teams have losses to St. Paul’s, who has already won the region, but a win tonight will all but ensure a 2-seed in the 5A playoffs.
Elsewhere in 5A Region 1 Gulf Shores visits region leader St. Paul’s. In 6A Region 2 play Foley visits Williamson at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and Robertsdale hosts McGill-Toolen. In Class 3A Region 1, Bayside Academy hosts Montgomery Catholic tonight in Daphne.
Vigor at Spanish Fort: Spanish Fort (5-2, 3-1) has won four straight games since losing to St. Paul’s in the third week of the season. They will put that win streak to the test tonight against a tough Vigor Wolves (5-2, 3-1) team that features a defense that is giving up an average of 8.3 points per game. The Wolves are led by three defensive players who have already made high profile Division-1 commitments. The Wolves have three shutouts this season and lost two games by a combined three points. Spanish Fort is playing well right now and is tough to beat at home. The Toros are well coached and should be prepared for whatever Vigor throws at them. Prediction: Spanish Fort 14, Vigor 12.
Gulf Shores at St. Paul’s: Gulf Shores (4-3, 1-3) has struggled in 5A Region 1 play, and things won’t get any easier for the Dolphins tonight at region leader St. Paul’s (6-1, 5-0). St. Paul’s is led by powerful and fast junior running back Jordan Huff, and the Dolphins will surely see a steady dose of him from the start. A Dolphins win would keep them alive for the fourth playoff spot in the region, but beating the Saints at home on homecoming is a tall order. Prediction: St. Paul’s 31, Gulf Shores 17.
Foley at Williamson: Foley desperately needs a win tonight if it wants to reach the 6A playoffs. The Lions (4-3, 2-3) have three region losses and a fourth could knock them out of playoff contention. Foley played well in a loss to Fairhope last week, and it needs to play well again tonight to beat a talented Williamson team. Prediction: Foley 28, Williamson 17.
McGill-Toolen at Robertsdale: Robertsdale has struggled off to a 1-6 record, with one win coming against a Satsuma team that has been depleted after a school split. McGill-Toolen is 7-0 and has one of the top defenses in Class 6A. Prediction: McGill 31, Robertsdale 10.
Montgomery Catholic at Bayside Academy: Bayside Academy has never won eight games in a regular season, but the 7-0 Admirals should be able to do it against a 2-5 Montgomery Catholic team tonight at Freedom Stadium in Daphne. Bayside averages 37.1 points per game, while Montgomery Catholic averages a region-low 12.1. Prediction: Bayside Academy 35, Montgomery Catholic 10.
