Baldwin County deputy shoots Pine Grove man after suspect reaches for shotgun

BAY MINETTE — A Pine Grove resident remains hospitalized after being shot by a deputy during a traffic stop when he did not comply with directions and reached for a shotgun in his vehicle, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded to a residence on Old Brady Road Saturday in reference to a domestic incident.

A neighbor advised that Stephen Bryan had taken a shotgun into a tool shed at the rear of his residence and appeared to be barricading himself inside. Bryan was gone upon deputies arrival.

Bryan’s wife advised authorities that her husband had made several statements that lead her to believe he was suicidal.

A county-wide broadcast was sent to area law enforcement to be on the lookout for Bryan. On Sunday, morning at approximately 12:30, Baldwin County Deputies and Bay Minette Police Officers spotted Bryan on Highway 59 in Bay Minette.

A traffic stop was initiated. During the stop, Bryan did not comply with the officers request and eventually reached into his truck for a shotgun, lawmen said. At that point Bryan was shot by law enforcement officers.

Bryan was transported to the North Baldwin Infirmary Hospital where he underwent surgery.

An investigation is under way and is being conducted by the Baldwin County Major Crime task Force.

According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office website, Bryan has been arrested and charged at least three times in the past 20 years. He was charged with third-degree assault in September 1993 and again in August 2001. He was accused of harassing communications in March 2000.
