Baldwin County celebrates young artists reflecting on freedom

Posted

Fifth-grade students across Baldwin County are showing what freedom means to them through art, and the county recently honored their creativity in the America 250 Poster Contest.

The contest, part of the nationwide America 250 initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, invited students to express patriotism and civic values through their own eyes, a news release said. Submissions from schools across the county showcased thoughtful, imaginative interpretations of the theme "What Freedom Means to Me."

Winners were selected from each County Commission District, and commissioners visited schools to congratulate students in person, celebrating alongside teachers, administrators and families.

"This contest gave students an opportunity to express what freedom means through their own eyes," Commissioner Billie Jo Underwood said in the release. "We are proud to recognize these students and celebrate the creativity and thoughtfulness they brought to this important milestone in our nation’s history."

In addition to district winners, students were recognized in categories including Best Overall, Best Use of Theme, Most Creative, Best Historical Representation and Judges’ Choice. Winning artwork will be displayed in Baldwin County Commission offices, giving the public a chance to see the unique perspectives of the county’s youngest residents.

"The Baldwin County Commission extends its appreciation to local schools, teachers, and families for their support and participation in this program, helping inspire the next generation to reflect on the meaning of freedom and civic pride," the Baldwin County Commission said in the release.
