ROBERTSDALE, Alabama --- The Baker Hornets spoiled the Robertsdale Golden Bears Homecoming Friday night with a 34-7 win at J.D. Sellars Stadium in Robertsdale.
Two costly turnovers deep in their own territory in the first half cost the Bears 14 points as the Hornets took a 27-0 halftime lead and cruised to 4-1 on the season, dropping RHS to 0-5.
Baker then scored with just 13 ticks off the clock in the second half, rumbling 60 yards in one play after an onside kick attempt went out of bounds at the Hornet 40.
On its ensuing drive, Robertsdale would get its only score of the game, marching 63 yards in 10 plays, led by senior QB Alphonso Stewart and running back DeMarcus Robinson.
Stewart carried the ball himself six times for 49 yards on the drive and completed 3 of 3 passes, one to Robinson and two to Joshua Laird. The RHS QB called his own number on the last two plays of the drive, a 16-yard run to take the Bears inside the Red Zone, then scored from 14 yards out. Kicker Chandler Cordova booted the extra point to cut the lead to 34-7 with 8:28 remaining in the third period.
From there, Baker mounted three drives, but failed to score as the Bears made a defensive stop and the Hornets missed a 32-yard fieldgoal on their next drive, Tavaris Curry recovered a Baker fumble at the Bear 23, then Ryan Hagaman fell on the ball at the RHS 44 on the following drive.
RHS would take the ball from there and drive down to the Baker 2-yard line.
After a penalty put the ball back to the RHS 39, Stewart completed to Laird for a six-yard gain, then ran for 14 into Baker territory at the 41. Sophomore QB Dylan Smith completed aa 21-yard pass to Onyx Brown to the Baker 20.
Stewart added two more runs of four yards each with an eight-yard run by Smith in between and a Baker penalty pushed the ball all the way to the 2-yard line.
But a pitch from Stewart to Robinson went behind the runner and Baker fell on the ball taking over at their own 6 and running out the clock on the Bears.
Stewart rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries, completing 5 of 15 passes with one interception for 39 yards. Smith was 1 of 4 passing with an interception for the Bears for 21 yards, while Robinson added 62 yards on 10 carries.
Senior running back Berren Tyson led the way for the Hornets with 148 yards on 16 carries, scoring three touchdowns, the first on just one play after the Hornets intercepted the Bears on the second play from scrimmage, returning the ball from near midfield all the way to the Bear 11.
Tyson would score from there and the extra point gave the Hornets a 7-0 lead with 11:02 to play in the first period.
Tyson would score again from one yard out after the Hornets drove 76 yards in 21 plays, capitalizing on Bear penalties along the way.
Robertsdale appeared to have stopped the Hornets on the 4-yard line but, after lining up for a 21-yard fieldgoal, a Bear penalty gave the Hornets new life at the 2. After lining up to kick again from 19 yards out, Baker would take a timeout, then bring their offense back onto the field. After another Bear penalty put the ball at the 1, Tyson punched it in on fourth down from a yard out and the missed extra point left the score at 13-0 with 5:29 to go in the half.
Robertsdale would fumble on the next play from scrimmage and three plays and a Bear penalty later, Tyson scored his third TD of the game from two yards out and the extra point gave the Hornets a 20-0 lead with 4:16 to go in the half.
Baker would add another score before the half, again driving nearly the length of the field, 85 yards, in 10 plays with quarterback Forrest Anderson connecting with Travis Wells for the score to go up 27-0 with 17.5 seconds left in the half.
The Golden Bears return to 6A Region 2 play Friday night, still seeking their first win of the season against the 4-1 Fairhope Pirates.
