Baker boys beat Daphne Trojans 46-45

DAPHNE, Alabama — Brandon Grant made just one-of-three free throw opportunities with 2.0 seconds left to give Baker a one-point lead at Daphne Tuesday night.

The Trojans got the ball back with 1.8 seconds to go but couldn’t get off a good shot and fell to the Hornets by the narrowest of margins, 46-45.

Daphne (2-8) had the No. 8 ranked Hornets on the upset ropes in the fourth quarter, but made maybe one too many of what Trojan head coach Cedric Yelding calls “Youthfulness,” a.k.a. “Mistakes.”

But Yelding had no problem with his very young team’s effort, especially having fallen to the Hornets in the season opener 79-47 at Baker.

“The effort was definitely there tonight,” he said. “We had a few mental mistakes at the end but we have improved tremendously. I’m very proud of the guys. We didn’t do too well the first half of the season but I’m eager to get the second half of the season started. I thought we ended the first half of the season on a positive note tonight. We’re going to get away now for about a week and not practice, then we’re going to get back to work.”

Grant finished with 11 points for Baker while teammate Lawyer Lilly managed 22 to lead all. Preston Hughes was Daphne's high scorer with 15 points while Chris Sain added 11. Devonte Young and Brandon Nero each added six for the Trojans.

The Trojans fought back from a 14-9 first-quarter hole to trail by just one 25-24 at the half. The youthful Trojans then picked up the pace and the pressure to take the lead 33-31 seven minutes into the third quarter and then held on for a 35-33 lead going into the fourth.

With 4:01 left in the game, Daphne had a 41-39 lead and two minutes later led by six, but led by just a point 45-44 at 1:33.

“That’s five games where we have had a chance to win it at the end,” Yelding said. “We have to learn how to close out games. We could have been 7-3 now instead of 2-8 if we had closed out those games. We led by six in the fourth quarter against Baker but you look at them and at us and you can see the difference. They were down six points but with eight seniors, they were calm and poised while we weren’t very fluid.”

Baker was 7-of-12 at the free throw line, Daphne was 9-for-16.
