The Alabama Scenic River Trail has opened applications for its 2026 Waterway Enhancement Program, a grant initiative aimed at expanding safe and inclusive access to waterways across the state.
The program supports Alabama-based nonprofit organizations working to improve water recreation and address local needs through community-led solutions. Designed to be accessible for both established and emerging groups, the Waterway Enhancement Program is especially suited for smaller or community-based organizations, including those with limited grant-writing experience.
Applications will be accepted from Jan. 13 through March 13 and must be submitted by 5 p.m. Grants of up to $5,000 are available per project. Matching funds are encouraged but not required, and projects may receive full or partial funding.
Funding decisions are expected in April, with funds available by mid-May. Projects must be completed within the grant cycle from May through November, and final reports are due in December.
Eligible projects include launch site improvements, safety equipment purchases, community events and water-based education or safety initiatives. Organizations may receive funding for up to two consecutive years. Groups that received Waterway Enhancement Program grants in both 2024 and 2025 are not eligible for the 2026 cycle but may apply again in 2027.
The application process was designed to be clear and approachable, with expectations outlined in the program’s request for proposals. Beyond funding individual projects, the program also aims to help organizations build confidence in applying for grants and managing funded work to support long-term growth and future funding success.
Information on the impact of previous projects is available at www.alabamascenicrivertrail.com.
Organizations with questions about eligibility, program fit or the application process are encouraged to review the request for proposals and contact Martha Grace Mize, director of growth and development, at development@alabamascenicrivertrail.com.
